Lions Run Past the Bombers

Men's rugby ran past the St. Louis Bombers 88-12 in a match Friday night at Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Mo.

The Lions wasted little time before getting on the scoreboard, notching the first try of the game in the seventh minute on a run from Toma Ghattas.  With a Lunaile Tshuma conversion, Lindenwood led 7-0.  That advantage was doubled just three minutes later when Sebastian Kalm scored and the conversion was added.

The Lions offense continued to click, resulting in another five players crossing the try line.  Nicholas Markowski, James Poli, Tamatasi Paogofie-Buyten, Sione Fangaiuiha, and Tshuma added their names to the scorebook, leading to a 50-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Kalm scored his second try of the game at the five minute mark, but moments later, the Bombers broke the shutout to make the score 55-7.  Lindenwood went on another scoring binge over the next 30 minutes of game time to balloon the advantage to 81-7.  With five minutes left, the Bombers broke through for their second try, and it was 81-12.  On one of the last plays of the game, the Lions scored off of a nice inside ball from Maanihera Kapa to winger Kolton Nelson who darted in under the post.

In the end, 10 Lindenwood players crossed the try line.  Kalm and Paogofie-Buyten had two each while Ghattas, Markowski, Poli, Tshuma, Fangaiuiha, Nelson, Gabriel Romero, and Gabe Farley had one each.

The Lions return to action October 4 at home when they host the Glendale Men's Rugby Club.  The opening kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Lindenwood Track.
