Men's rugby took the lead early and pulled away in a 56-27 win over Indiana August 30 in Brownsburg, Ind.
The Lions scored in the first four minutes and took a 7-0 lead after the conversion. By halftime, that margin had doubled and they went to the break ahead 28-14.
Lindenwood continued to press the issue and extended the lead in the second half, despite a game effort from the Hoosiers. The Lions led by 39 late in the game before Indiana scored in the 76
th minute and then added another unconverted try on a broken play before the final whistle.
Sophomore Nick Feakes was a standout player in the kicking game as he went eight-for-eight in conversions. Lindenwood earned a nice victory on the road against a solid Hoosiers squad to move to 1-0 on the young season.
The first men's college D1A top 25 ranking was released two days after the match-up, and Indiana was listed in the 24
th spot. The Lions were playing their first game after a stinging loss in the USA Rugby semifinals to Saint Mary's last spring, and despite a solid recruiting class, were given the eighth spot in the ranking. BYU was listed first, followed by California, Saint Mary's, Life University, and Arkansas State.
Lindenwood returns to 15's action on September 13 for another road contest against Palmer College of Chiropractic. The opening kickoff is set for 3 p.m. in Davenport, Iowa. The September 6 meeting with Wisconsin on September 6 has been canceled.
