Roller hockey won two and lost one in the first weekend of play October 19-21 in the Great Plains Collegiate Inline Hockey League (GPCIHL) at Midwest Sport Hockey in Ballwin, Missouri. The Lions defeated St. Louis Community College – Meramec 4-0 and Bethel (Tenn.) 4-1 on Friday, but then lost to the Wildcats 3-2 on Sunday.
In the opening game against Meramec, Kenneth Gibson was named Star No. 1 with two goals.
Austin Steger netted a goal and helped on another to earn Star No. 3 honors. The Lions outshot the Archers 45-14 and Tyler Kolly stopped all 14 pucks he faced to earn the win in goal for Lindenwood.
In the first contest against Bethel,
Josh Martin stopped 25 of 26 shots for the Lions to earn Star No. 1 honors. Jacob McGuire scored twice and was named Star No. 2. Joseph Mula had a goal and assist for Star No. 3 recognition. Lindenwood outshot the Wildcats 28-26 overall, but had to survive a barrage of 17 shots from Bethel in the final period.
It was another close battle on Sunday, but the Wildcats prevailed on that day. Lion goals came from Anthony Willis and Mula as Lindenwood outshot Bethel 29-27, but three of those 27 shots beat Kolly who took the hard-luck loss for the Lions.
Lindenwood begins the season with a record of 2-1. Roller hockey Gold returns to action November 2-3 at Midwest Sport Hockey in Ballwin, Missouri. The Lions are currently scheduled to face St. Louis Community College – Meramec and the Bethel D1 squad on Friday, then the Kansas State University D2 team and the Bethel D4 team on Saturday.
