Men's ice hockey earned its second straight series sweep with a 5-1 win over Maryville University Saturday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
All of the scoring in the game came in the first two periods with the Lions taking a 2-0 lead after the opening frame.
Ryan Leonard started the offense with his first collegiate goal at the 14:41 mark with help from
Blake Finley and
Caige Sterzer.
Andy Willis then hit the back of the net on a play set up by
Max Helgeson and
Ryan Finnegan at 17:25.
Lindenwood added another three in the second while yielding only one. The Lions built a 3-0 advantage over the Saints when
Kyle Jeffers and
Aiden Yakimchuk set up
Vegard Faret at 1:24. After a Maryville goal made it 3-1 with 11:23 remaining in the period, Willis struck for his second of the game, assisted by Finnegan and Helgeson at 10:27. Yakimchuk sounded the horn on the power play with 4:41 left, as both Finnegan and Willis each earned their third points of the contest.
The Lions outshot the Saints 38-24, and
Trent Burnham stopped 23 of the 24 pucks he faced to earn the victory in goal.
With the win, Lindenwood improved to 6-1-0 overall. The Lions will host Air Force October 23-24 for a two-game series. The puck drops at 4:10 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center.
