Four goals in the second period helped lift the Lions to a 6-0 win over No. 8 seeded Stony Brook in the quarterfinals of the 2022 American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Men's Division I National Championship Sunday night at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
After a scoreless first, the Lions sounded the horn twice in a span of 28-seconds in the second.
Ryan Finnegan blasted home a shot at the 6:07 mark with help from Kyler Murphy and
Kyle Jeffers, and then
Aiden Yakimchuk hit the back of the net at 6:35 on a play set up by
Andy Willis and
Caleb Price. Lindenwood increased its lead to 3-0 with 10:10 remaining in the period when
David Gagnon and Price fed
Caige Sterzer for a power play goal. Finnegan and Jeffers created an opportunity for Gagnon and he delivered a drive at the 15:45 mark to make it 4-0.
The Lions finished off the Seawolves with two more in the third. Jeffers scored at the 3:08 mark off a feed from Finnegan and then
Max Helgeson hit the back of the net off a pass from
Jackson Wozniak with 1:38 remaining in regulation.
Lindenwood outshot Stony Brook 55 to 22 and
Trent Burnham stopped all 22 shots that he faced to earn the shutout victory in goal.
With the win, the Lions advanced to the semifinals where they will face No. 7 seed Adrian College March 14. The Bulldogs stopped No. 15 Ohio University on Sunday 7-1. The puck drops at 8 p.m. Monday night at the Centene Community Ice Center.
