The Lions completed a series sweep in Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL) action with a 6-4 victory over Ohio University Saturday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
In a game that remained close through the first moments of the middle period, Lindenwood scored first when
Aiden Yakimchuk broke free for an unassisted effort at the 4:57 mark. The Lions doubled that advantage moments later on the power play.
Kyler Newman and
Kyle Jeffers set up
David Gagnon at 8:06, but the Bobcats roared back to tie with the next two goals. Lindenwood regained the lead with 4:53 remaining in the first on an
Andy Willis shot set up by
Caige Sterzer and
Max Helgeson and it was 3-2 Lions at the first intermission.
Lindenwood took advantage of another power play early in the second when
Mitch Allard sounded the horn with help from
Vegard Faret and Willis at the 57-second mark. Ohio responded just over four minutes later to make it a one goal game again, and the Bobcats had a chance to tie things on the power play seconds later, but the Lions turned the tables. Faret stole the puck and fed it to a breaking
Hayden Ursulak who split the pipes for the short-handed tally to make it 5-3 Lindenwood at the 6:04 mark. The lead expanded to three before the end of the period when Gagnon netted his second of the contest on a play set up by Yakimchuk and
Ryan Leonard with 2:40 remaining in the period. The Bobcats scored the only goal in the third, but it wasn't enough to make up the deficit.
The Lions outshot Ohio 44 to 27 and
Stephen Friedland stopped seven of 10 through the first 25 minutes of gametime before
Trent Burnham took over for the rest of the contest, stopping 16 of 17.
With the win, Lindenwood improved to 8-0-0 in the CSCHL and to 13-3-0 overall. The same two teams will face each other again February 4-5 in Athens, Ohio. The puck drops at 7 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night at the Bird Arena.
