The Lions cruised to a 6-1 victory over Ohio University in the semifinals of the Central States Collegiate Hockey League (CSCHL) conference tournament Saturday afternoon at the Iowa State Arena in Ames, Iowa.
Lindenwood took an early lead when
Caleb Price lit the lamp at the 3:06 mark of the first. The Lions started pulling away in the second with three more goals.
David Gagnon hit the back of the net first, after a pass from
Ryan Finnegan with 13:16 left in the period. Helgeson made it 3-1 Lions just over two minutes later on a feed from
Zach Martin. The Bobcats broke the shutout with just under six minutes remaining, but Gagnon and Finnegan combined for a goal once again, but traded places with Finnegan getting the score. The pair involved themselves in the next scoring play as they earned assists on a
Kyle Jeffers effort just 34-seconds into the third to make it 5-1.
Mitch Allard put the finishing touches on the victory with help from
Caige Sterzer with 13:56 left in regulation.
Lindenwood outshot Ohio 45 to 24, and
Trent Burnham stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced to earn the win in goal.
The Lions will play for the CSCHL conference tournament title against the winner of the Illinois versus Iowa State matchup in the second semifinal. The championship game is set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Iowa State Arena.
