The roller hockey Gold squad won the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) Men's Division IV Championship with a 10-0 victory over Slippery Rock D4 Sunday afternoon at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
The Lions controlled the contest from the opening faceoff, and jumped on the Rock with five unanswered goals in the first period alone.
Pat Mahoney sounded the horn first with an unassisted and short-handed effort at the 2:06 mark.
Aydin Schwetz scored a minute later with help from
Bryce Pierce, and then
Bennett Blake made it 3-0 on the power play at 6:53, assisted by
Connor Bradley and
Dillon Dale.
Sean Maude split the pipes next at 8:42 on a play set up by Schwetz and Mahoney and Blake netted the final goal of the period at 11:01.
Brett Worster and Bradley earned the helpers on the play.
Lindenwood added another three tallies in the second, beginning with a
Clayton Liefeld shot just 43-seconds into the period off a pass from Worster. The Lions turned the tables on a Slippery Rock power play by getting another short-handed goal from
Cameron Rodriguez from Bradley at 5:44. Maude set up Dale at even-strength at 7:42 to give Lindenwood an 8-0 advantage. Bradley scored at 4:25 of the third and Dale found the back of the net at 5:19 to round out the offensive effort for the Lions, who outshot the Rock 46-8 in the game.
Chase Christopher stopped all eight shots that he faced to earn the championship win in goal.
Connor Bradley was named Star No. 1 with a goal and three assists,
Dillon Dale earned Star No. 2 honors with two goals and an assist, and
Sean Maude was named Star No. 3 with a goal and two assists.
With the victory, roller hockey gold claimed its 15
th national title in program history, finishing the season with a perfect 20-0 record.
Earlier in the day on Sunday, the Lions advanced with an 11-1 win against Michigan State D4 in the semifinals. Worster earned Star No. 1 honors with two goals and two assists, Bradley was named Star No. 2 with a goal and three assists, and Schwetz earned Star No. 3 honors with two goals and an assist. Rodriguez, Blake, Liefeld, and Nick Ettelbrick added single tallies while Maude scored twice. Lindenwood outshot the Spartans 35 to 7 and
Clayton Davis made six saves on seven shots to earn the victory in goal.
The Lions swept through pool play with three convincing wins on Friday as they outscored their opponents by a combined 40-1, beginning with a 15-0 shutout of Arizona D4 in the morning. Bradley was named Star No. 1 with five goals and two assists, Blake earned Star No. 2 honors with three goals and three assists, and Worster claimed Star No. 3 honors with two goals and three assists. Dillon, Pierce, Ettelbrick, Maude, and Nils Thegerstrom each added a goal to the Lindenwood ledger as the Lions outshot the Wildcats 44 to 4. Christopher stopped all four shots he faced in goal.
Later on Friday, Lindenwood stopped Slippery Rock D4, 9-1. Rodriguez earned Star No. 1 honors with two goals and an assist, Bradley was named Star No. 2 with a goal and two assists, and Mahoney earned Star No. 3 honors with a goal and two assists. Schwetz, Blake, Pierce, Maude, and Worster also scored for the Lions, who outshot the Rock 39-7. Davis claimed another victory in goal with six saves on seven shots.
In the final round of pool play Friday night, Lindenwood defeated Cal State – Fullerton 16-0. The Lions impressed on both sides of the puck as they outshot the Titans 44-0. Schwetz was named Star No. 1 with three goals and five assists, Maude earned Star No. 2 honors with four goals, and Ettelbrick was named Star No. 3 with two goals and an assist. Worster added two tallies for Lindenwood while Dale, Rodriguez, Liefeld, Bradley, and Thegerstrom each scored once for the Lions. Christopher didn't face a single shot on goal, but earned the win for the Lions..
