The roller hockey Gold squad claimed its 17
th title in program history with an 8-0 shutout of Boston University Sunday afternoon in the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) Division AA Championship at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn, Maine.
The Lions took an early 1-0 lead when Nicholaus Meyer set up
Dillon Bilek at the 3:02 mark of the first. They added another off the blade of
Shaun Sapienza with help from
Cameron Green at 11:18.
A roughing penalty early in the second left Lindenwood a man down, but Matthew Sherman took control of the puck and passed to Sapienza for a shorthanded goal at 1:47. Just over a minute later, Sapienza completed a hat trick off a feed from Meyer to make it 4-0. The Lions continued to control the game and added another when Drew Royer passed to Lucas Hurst to sound the horn at 6:15 and Lindenwood carried a 5-0 advantage into the third.
Special teams proved to be a factor as the Lions sealed the victory with two power play goals in the final frame. Andrew Deciantis netted the first at 5:01 on a play set up by Sapienza and
Dillon Bilek, then Bilek hit the back of the net himself at 7:50, assisted by Sapienza and Deciantis. Trevor West put the finishing touches on the win with a Jay Winton assisted effort with 48 seconds remaining.
Lindenwood outshot Boston University 37-14 and
Clayton Davis stopped all 14 shots he faced to earn the victory in goal. Sapienza earned Star No. 1 honors with his hat trick and two assists, Bilek was named Star No. 2 with two goals and an assist, and Deciantis received Star No. 3 recognition with a goal and assist.
The Lions advanced to the championship game with a 7-0 shutout of Ohio State in the semifinals Sunday morning, scoring three in the first in a span of about two minutes, three in the second, and one in the third.
Cameron Green earned Star No. 1 honors with a hat trick, Sapienza received Star No. 2 recognition with a goal and three assists, and Bilek was named Star No. 3 with three assists.
Lindenwood outshot the Buckeyes 42-9 and Joshua Henson stopped all nine shots he faced in goal.
Roller hockey Gold defeated the University of Massachusetts 12-1 in the quarterfinal game Saturday afternoon. The Lions scored the first two goals of the contest before giving one back to the Minutemen with 3:46 left in the first, but Lindenwood added another two to lead 4-1 after the opening 12 minutes. It was all Lions from there as they scored five times in the second, three of the goals coming on the power play. Lindenwood added three more in the final period to secure the win.
Bilek earned Star No. 1 honors with two goals and an assist, Sapienza was named Star No. 2 with a goal and two assists, and
Kade Uetz received Star No. 3 recognition with a goal and two assists.
AA Division pool play began early Friday morning with the Lions defeating Arizona State 5-0. After getting a single goal in the first period, they added two short-handed efforts in the second before tacking on another two in the third.
Lindenwood outshot the Sun Devils 37-5 and Davis stopped all five shots he faced in goal. Green earned Star No. 1 honors with a goal and two assists, Sapienza was named Star No. 2 with two goals, and Bilek received Star No. 3 recognition with two goals.
Later that same day, the Lions shutout Ohio State 11-0. After scoring twice in the opening period, they exploded for six more in the second and three in the third, outshooting the Buckeyes 44-7 in the process. Connor Hof earned the victory in goal with seven saves.
Leonardo Dantas was named Star No. 1 with a hat trick and an assist, Deciantis received Star No. 2 recognition with two goals and an assist, and Jay Winton was named Star No. 3 with a goal and two assists.
Lindenwood wrapped up pool play on Saturday morning with a 7-1 win over Slippery Rock. After exchanging power play goals in the first eight minutes of the game, the Lions took a 2-1 advantage with an even strength play, then pulled away from the Rock with four more in the second, including a short-handed goal. One more in the third gave Lindenwood with six-goal margin of victory.
The Lions outshot Slippery Rock 32-18 and Henson made 17 saves on the 18 shots he faced. Bilek earned Star No. 1 honors with a hat trick and two assists, Meyer received Star No. 2 recognition with a goal and two assists, and Deciantis was named Star No. 3 with two goals.
In addition to winning the 17
th AA Division title in program history, it was also the third straight championship for the Lions, who outscored their opponents 50-2 over the six games of pool and knockout play. Roller hockey Gold completes its season with a 7-4 mark in the Midwest Collegiate Roller Hockey League (MCRHL) and a 16-4 record overall.
