After finishing in third place to advance to match play, men's bowling was knocked out in the quarterfinals while the women's team fell to the eventual tournament champion in the semifinals at the Jayhawk Challenge October 25-26 in Lawrence and Topeka, Kansas.
The Lions had a strong Saturday with three of five team games in the 1000's, with highs of 1094 and 1079. Their pace slowed a bit towards the end of the day, but Lindenwood still sat in second place with an overall total of 5192, 179 pins behind Wichita State in first place and 155 pins ahead of Newman in third.
Emmanuel McPherson (5th) and Mikael Najarro (3rd)
Baker competition on Sunday did not go as well, but the Lions still averaged close to 200 through the first 10 games of the day with highs of 217, 216, and 214. Lindenwood started with sets of 779, 796, and 790, but barely broke 700 in the final set. With a baker total of 3070 (191.88 average), the Lions had a grand total of 8262, which dropped them to third in the standings, just five pins ahead of Avila University in fourth. Newman finished almost 200 pins ahead in second with Wichita State on top.
As the No. 3 seed, Lindenwood faced No. 6 seed Hastings College in the quarterfinals of best-of-five baker match play. After a slow start in game one, the Lions finished with six strikes in a row for a come-from-behind 207 to 196 victory. Lindenwood filled nine of 10 frames in game two, but it wasn't enough in a 218-190 loss. The Lions returned to their starting lane for the match and quickly found their groove again in a 237-170 win and a 2-1 lead. But, game four was a struggle. Lindenwood never really matched up and fell 221-166. The Lions fell behind in the fifth and deciding game, but finished well and had a chance to extend a string of strikes into the final frame to steal the match, but the pins did not fall and Hastings took the game and match 206-199.
The scoring pace in women's competition was low and the Lady Lions were no exception. After starting with 886 in the first team game on Saturday, they didn't get close to that total again until game five when they posted 884. With a day one total of 4314, Lindenwood still managed to sit in fourth place, just 11 pins behind Morningside in third, 136 pins behind Ottawa (Kan.) in second, and 333 pins behind Central Missouri in first.
Hailey Bozych (4th)
The Lady Lions had a good start to baker play on Sunday. With 749, they posted the highest set one in the entire field. It was enough to pass Morningside and edge in front of Ottawa by five pins, but struggles returned in the remaining sets and Lindenwood didn't break 700 again. With just two games over 200 which included a high of 218, the Lady Lions totaled 2758 (172.38 average) for the day and had a grand total of 7072 to sit in third place 86 pins ahead of Morningside and 61 pins behind Ottawa in second with Central Missouri leading.
Lindenwood faced No. 6 seed Culver-Stockton in the quarterfinals of match play and it proved to be an epic battle, but it didn't start that way. The Lady Lions came out firing with a clean 214 compared to 142 from the Wildcats. That momentum continued into game two and it looked like Lindenwood would run away with it, but a couple of open frames late set up a must mark situation in the 10
th frame. That shot resulted in a split and when it wasn't converted, a 167 to 167 tie.
The low scoring pace for the weekend returned in game three with the Lady Lions falling 165-142. Game four wasn't much better, but four strikes in a row in the final two frames gave Lindenwood a come-from-behind 181-169 win. The Lady Lions started game five with a spare and four strikes in a row and cruised to a 199-138 victory to seal a 3.5 to 1.5 match win.
Lindenwood faced No. 2 seed Ottawa in the semifinals. After a slow start to game one, the Lady Lions finished well to take it 192-178 and they built a big lead in game two, but five open frames in a row resulted in a 172-151 loss. Lindenwood didn't find a look again and went almost two games worth of frames without a spare. After the Lady Lions fell 181-152 in game three, they only shot 129 in game four while Ottawa had a clean 193 to win the match 3-1.
In individual competition,
Mikael Najarro led the Lions with a five-game total of 1146 (229.2 average), including high games of 289 and 232. That was good enough to finish third in the men's field of 224 players and earn a spot on the All-Tournament Team.
