Women’s Bowling Makes Match Play as No. 2 Seed at Team Match Games; Men Finish 20th

Women's bowling qualified for match play as the No. 2 seed and then fell to No. 7 seed Tennessee Wesleyan 2-1 in the bracket quarterfinals at Team Match Games while the men finished 20th November 22-23 in Belleville and Fairview Heights, Illinois.

Competition Saturday included five team games, and the Lady Lions had a solid start with games of 931 and 976 to sit in third place in the field of 22 teams, just 20 pins behind Mount Mercy in first, but game three was a struggle with only 851 and that dropped Lindenwood back to fifth. The Lady Lions rebounded in a big way in game four, firing 1038. That pushed them all the way to second, but the final game of the day was almost 200 pins lower. With a day one total of 4635, Lindenwood sat in fourth place, 191 pins behind the Mustangs in first, 113 pins behind SCAD – Savannah in second, and 50 pins behind Cumberland University in third and with 16 baker games on tap for Sunday.

The opening set was a position round with the third place Phoenix on the same pair, but the Lady Lions had a terrible start, shooting only 122 with five splits and six opens overall in the first game. Lindenwood recovered well, though, and finished with games of 218, 182, and 209 for a set of 731. The Lady Lions followed with a set of 868 that included games of 246, 167, 199, and 256. That put Lindenwood back in second place chasing Mount Mercy for the top spot. After finishing set three with 732 and set four with 765, the Lady Lions totaled 3096 (193.5 average), the high baker total in the field, and had averaged almost 200 after the final 15 games after the rough start. With a grand total of 7731, the Lady Lions finished just 66 pins behind the Mustangs and 95 pins ahead of SCAD – Savannah in third.

The top eight advanced to best-of-three match play. Facing No. 7 seed Tennessee Wesleyan, Lindenwood jumped out to a big lead, but three open frames in a row let the Bulldogs back in it. The Lady Lions finished with four strikes in a row to take game one 204-184. Lindenwood started slowly in game two while Tennessee Wesleyan continued its consistent play. After falling behind, the Lady Lions made a comeback but came up short in a 180-173 loss. The Bulldogs took an early lead in game three and never looked back, topping Lindenwood 214-171 to advance to the semifinals and knock the Lady Lions out.

In men's competition, the Lions started slowly and never really were able to put much together over the course of the weekend. A starting game of 870 on Saturday was followed by games of 937, 945, 907, and 916 with only three individual games in the 200's. With a day one total of 4575, Lindenwood sat in 24th place in the field of 30 teams, 432 pins away from the top eight cut line for match play.

The Lions came into baker play on Sunday with a new strategy, but it didn't work initially as they only shot 645 in the opening set and fell a spot to 25th in the standings. Lindenwood broke 200 for the first time of the day in game seven with 231 and that finally created some momentum. After finishing set two with 782, five of the final eight games were above 200, including a high of 241. The Lions finished with sets of 836 and 797 for a baker total of 3060 (191.25 average). While it wasn't enough to climb high enough to make match play, they did move up five spots to 20th place with a grand total of 7635.

In other action, the Lions junior division team finished fourth with a grand total of 8092 to earn the No. 4 seed for match play. They faced top seed Wichita State 1 in the best-of-three semifinal match and upset the Shockers two games to one, with games of 180, 177, and 179. The best-of-five Junior Division final against Wichita State 2 went the distance. After shooting 176 in a game one loss, Lindenwood tied the match while shooting 198 in game two. The Lions only managed 144 in a game three loss before rebounding once again with 199 in game four. Lindenwood stumbled in the deciding final game with 149 and lost the match 3-2.

Individually, Liz Rittenour led the Lady Lions with a five-game total of 990 (198 average), including high games of 237 and 211, to finish sixth in the women's field of 158 players, missing the top five for All-Tournament honor by just nine pins. Isabelle Fletcher totaled 944 (188.8 average) to take 17th, followed by Julia Smith in 20th with 933 (186.6 average). Hailey Bozych shot 929 (185.8 average) to finish 22nd and Sadie Bettendorf took 28th with 906 (181.2 average).

Isaiah Armstrong led the Lions in men's individual competition. He totaled 1037 (207.4 average), including high games of 259 and 226, to finish 39th in the field of 273 players. Not far behind, Ryan Mackintosh took 42nd with 1029 (205.8 average) and Eli Northcutt took 50th with 1022 (204.4 average). Kaden Lansford totaled 1002 (200.4 average) for 60th place and Christian Petersen totaled 987 for 66th place. Luke Batchelor shot 965 (193 average) to finish 82nd and Emmanuel McPherson shot 958 (191.6 average) to finish 87th. Hunter Pirtle averaged 193.25 for four games, Issac McGuire averaged 196.67 for three games, and Max Sauer averaged 206.5 for two games to help the Lions cause.

Men's and women's bowling gets a long break before returning to the lanes for the ISBPA Kegel Midwest Collegiate Classic January 17-18 in Addison, Illinois.
