Roller Hockey Gold Jackson Case

Lions Cruise to Victory with Pool Play and Bracket Wins on Saturday

The roller hockey Gold squad picked up two more wins at the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Championships (NCRHA) on Saturday as they routed the Boston AA Terriers 10-0 and the Arizona AA Wildcats 11-2 at the Skatium in Fort Myers, Florida. The Lions' shutout of the Terriers came in the final game of NCRHA pool play action and then later that afternoon, they kicked off bracket play with a thumping of the Wildcats.

For the first time in the tournament, the Lions found themselves behind when Arizona started the scoring just 58 seconds into the first period. Lindenwood was not down long, however, as Shaun Sapienza scored a short-handed goal at 2:21 to even the score at one apiece. At 9:09, Bilek found the back of the net giving the Lions a lead they would not relinquish. While on the penalty kill less than a minute later, Andrew Deciantis scored off a nifty pass from Nicholaus Meyer for the Lions' second shorty of the period. Lindenwood led 3-1 heading into the second period of play.

The Lions only had 12 shots on goal in the second period but five of them found the back of the net. Nicolas Kruk scored the first at 3:31 and Trevor West the second at 5:29. Although leading 5-1, the Lions continued to apply pressure, scoring two goals 22 seconds apart and extending their lead to six. Drew Royer scored his first of the night at 5:56 followed by Leonardo Dantas at 6:18. The Wildcats scored one at 8:05, but the Lions responded with a goal by Royer at 8:32. Lindenwood led 8-2 at the end of two periods.

The third period was all Lions. Sapienza scored his second of the game at 4:38 off another great pass by Meyer. At the nine-minute mark, James Mueller set up Royer who completed the hat trick by scoring his third goal of the game. The Lions added one more at the 11-minute mark thanks to Brett Lloyd sealing an 11-2 win and a date in the next round of the tournament.

In the first round of bracket play, the Lions racked up 41 shots on goal to the Wildcats' 11 and eight different Lions got on the scoresheet. Niko Scott started in net and made nine of 11 possible saves and picked up the win. Scoring a hattrick on Saturday evening meant Royer was awarded Star No. 1 honors. Deciantis had a goal and two assists and was awarded Star No. 2 honors. Star No. 3 was given to Sapienza who scored a pair of goals on Saturday evening.

Much like the game against the Wildcats, the Lions' first match on Saturday against the Terriers was not much of a contest. Lindenwood jumped ahead 29 seconds into the opening frame thanks to Shaun Sapienza's third goal of the tournament. A couple minutes later, the Lions scored again while on the power play. Dillion Bilek scored the goal off a designed play started by Sapienza and Colin Markotay. At 4:36, the Lions extended their lead to 3-0 when Trevor West found the back of the net. Nicholaus Meyer scored the fourth Lions goal of the first period at 10:05.

After scoring four unanswered goals in the first period, the Lions added five more in the second. Brett Lloyd scored the first goal at 3:01 followed by a Nicolas Kruk tally at 4:35. Lindenwood led 5-0 when Leonardo Dantas scored at 7:30, then Lloyd snuck a shot past the Boston netminder a minute later to make it 6-0 in favor of Lindenwood. Everything that could go right was going right for the Lions as they were able to score a short-handed goal while James Mueller was in the penalty box for slashing. Sapienza scored the goal, his second goal of the contest. The Lions held a commanding 9-0 lead heading into the third period.

Lindenwood added one more goal 1:51 into the third period thanks to Lucas Hurst which made the score 10-0 in favor of the Lions.

The Lions offensive prowess was on full display once again as they racked up 30 shots on goal against the Terriers. But as impressive as the Lions offense, their defense was equally impressive as they limited Boston to just five shots on net and none in the third period. Although not tested much, Niko Scott made all five saves and earned another win. Sapienza earned Star No. 1 honors thanks to his two goals and two assists. Star No. 2 honors were awarded to Bilek who tallied a goal and three assists in the game. Brett Lloyd was awarded Star No. 3 as he scored two goals and picked up an assist.

The pair of victories on Saturday means that the undefeated Lions have secured themselves a date with a familiar foe, the Michigan State AA Spartans. Semifinal action will start tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the Skatium in Fort Myers, Florida.
