Men’s Rugby Trains Alongside Chicago Hounds MLR Squad

The Lindenwood Lions men's rugby program took a significant step in its postseason preparation on Friday, training and scrimmaging with the Chicago Hounds of Major League Rugby at the Lions for Hope Sports Complex in Chicago, Illinois. The opportunity to test themselves against professional opposition is a rare and valuable benchmark for a collegiate side.

From the opening exchanges, the tempo and physicality of the session demanded a higher level of precision. Lindenwood rose to the challenge, matching intensity across multiple phases while gaining firsthand exposure to the speed and detail required at the professional level.
Junior Harry Makatoa captured the mindset required to compete at that level, emphasizing growth through adversity.
"A diamond is just a chunk of coal that did well under pressure," Makatoa said, reflecting on the standard set throughout the session.
The experience provided a clear reference point for the Lions as they build toward playoff rugby. Decisions had to be made faster, execution had to be sharper, and physical contests were consistently at a higher threshold, elements that will now shape the team's preparation moving forward.

Captain David Scanlon highlighted both the value of the session and the pride within the group.
"Saturday  was a huge experience for us. Training with the Chicago Hounds pushed us physically and mentally, and we loved every minute of it," Scanlon said. "Proud of the way the boys represented Lindenwood and look forward to translating everything we learned on our push into playoffs. From all the boys here, we would also like to wish the Hounds the best of luck in the upcoming MLR season!"

From a tactical perspective, the session offered critical insights—particularly against the defensive speed and structure of a professional side. Attack and Backline Assistant Coach Wayden Mosinkie emphasized the growth shown by the group in those moments.

"I was proud of how the boys matched up physically. On attack it was unreal playing against that type of defensive line speed, and the boys can take confidence out of the session finding spaces and winning small battles against seasoned professionals," Mosinkie said. "Good people, great culture."

Beyond the on-field work, the Lions were welcomed with outstanding professionalism and hospitality by the Hounds organization. The team had the opportunity to engage with players and staff, experience the professional environment, and further understand the standards required at the next level of the game.

The trip also included time for the squad to connect off the field, strengthening internal bonds as they explored the city of Chicago.

This experience reinforces Lindenwood's commitment to operating at a professional standard. By engaging with top-tier competition and environments, the Lions continue to raise their ceiling, ensuring they are not only prepared for the demands of playoff rugby but are consistently evolving as a program.

Lindenwood Rugby extends its sincere gratitude to the Chicago Hounds for the opportunity, professionalism, and partnership. The lessons gained from this session will carry forward as the Lions push toward the business end of the season.
