For the third year in a row, the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association (NCRHA) D1 Premier Championship game was a match-up between Lindenwood University and Grand Canyon University. For the second year in a row, the Lions claimed the title, this time with a 6-3 victory over the Lopes April 18 at Brightspeed Ice Park in Springfield, Missouri.
Despite the outcome, Lindenwood actually trailed in the contest after GCU scored an unassisted goal at 10:06 of the first, but the Lions countered quickly when
Landon Kooker set up
Nick DellaMorte just 54-seconds later. Shots on goal were even at eight and the game was tied 1-1 after the first period.
The Lions pulled away in the second with three unanswered.
Luke DiPasquale sounded the horn first with help from
Parker Winkelmann at 1:37, then
Colin Markotay split the pipes unassisted at 6:08. Winkelmann fed
Landon Kooker at 8:33 and Lindenwood had a 4-1 lead. The Lopes cut into their deficit late in the period and it was 4-2 Lions at the second intermission.
Trailing by two goals, Grand Canyon had a push left and quickly pulled within a single tally at the 1:19 mark of the third, but a tripping penalty on the Lopes sent momentum back to Lindenwood. DellaMorte capitalized on the man-advantage chance off a pass from DiPasquale and it was back to a two-goal lead, 5-3 at 5:09. The Lions added their sixth goal off the blade of
Landon Kooker with just 22-seconds remaining in regulation to seal the win and back-to-back national titles and the 14
th D1 crown in program history.
The Lopes outshot Lindenwood 14-6 in the final frame and had a 26-25 advantage overall. Brett Lloyd earned the win in goal for the Lions, stopping 23 of the 26 shots he faced.
Landon Kooker earned Star No. 1 honors with two goals and an assist,
Nick DellaMorte was named Star No. 2 with two goals, and
Luke DiPasquale received Star No. 3 recognition with a goal and an assist.
Lindenwood was seeded directly into the finals after posting a 4-0 record in preliminary play April 15-17. The Lions earned a 6-3 victory against Arizona State on Wednesday.
Anthony Lazzaroni earned Star No. 1 honors with two goals and Bralen Kooker was named Star No. 2 with a goal and assist. Goals also came from Winkelmann, DiPasquale, and Dillon Bilek. Lindenwood outshot the Sun Devils 34-26 and
Jadyn Clark stopped 23 of 26 to get the win in goal.
The Lions played twice on Thursday, getting a 5-1 victory against Grand Canyon and a 5-2 win over Arizona State. After the GCU contest,
Anthony Lazzaroni was named Star No. 1 with two goals,
Nick DellaMorte received Star No. 2 recognition with a goal and assist, and
Jack Wedoski earned Star No. 3 honors with two assists. DiPasquale and Brolen Kooker also scored with Tyler Webb and
Cameron Green adding helpers for Lindenwood. The Lions outshot the Lopes 30-8 and Brett Lloyd made seven saves on eight shots in goal.
In the second game of the day against the Sun Devils, the outcome wasn't decided until the third period after heading to the last 12-minutes tied 2-2. DiPasquale scored twice to help Lindenwood pull away and he was named Star No. 1 with those two goals. Tyler Webb earned Star No. 2 honors with two goals, and
Landon Kooker received Star No. 3 recognition with a single goal. The Lions outshot Arizona State with 38-24 and
Jadyn Clark stopped 22 of 24 shots to get the victory in goal.
The final game of pool play resulted in a 6-3 win over Grand Canyon on Friday. Once again, the contest was tied early before a big second period allowed Lindenwood to pull away. Logan Wise earned Star No. 1 honors with two goals and
Luke DiPasquale was named Star No. 2 with a goal and assist. The Lions outshot GCU 20-16 and Brett Lloyd stopped 13 out of 16 shots in goal.
With five wins at the NCRHA Championship, Lindenwood completed its season with a 16-1 collegiate record and eight game winning streak.
