The roller hockey gold squad defeated St. Louis Community College – Meramec 7-2 Saturday morning in Great Plains Collegiate Inline Hockey League (GPCIHL) play at Matteson Square Gardens Tri-Plex in St. Peters, Missouri.
Only one goal was scored in the opening period and it came from
Caleb Cooper at 10:05 to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. That advantage was extended early in the second off the stick of
Austin Steger, who scored again on the power play later in the period to start a string of three goals in only 49 seconds.
Cameron Rodriguez lit the lamp on the man advantage and then
Jay Winton added an even strength goal to make it 5-0. Steger completed a hat trick at 6:46 in the third before the Archers finally broke the shutout on their own power play. Meramec scored again 39 seconds later, but Lindenwood found the back of the net on a play finished by
Addison Curcuru with two seconds left for the final margin.
Steger earned Star #1 honors with three goals, Kenneth Gibson was named Star #2 with three assists, and
Jake Abel earned Star #3 honors with two assists.
Tyler Kolly stopped 15 of the 17 pucks he faced to earn the win in goal as the Lions outshot the Archers 42-17.
The win lifts the Gold squad to 10-4 overall. The Lions compete at the GPCIHL Regional Championship February 22-24 at Midwest Sport Hockey in Ballwin, Missouri.
