The Lindenwood Lions baseball team got its first and second victories on the year and in the MIAA on Sunday at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo. Lindenwood won game one by a score of 7-0 and won game two on an 11
th inning walk with the bases loaded to give them a 3-2 victory.
In game one, the Lions were able to get on the board early and the defense played strong.
Dylan Terrell started the game on the mound and earned his first victory on the year, shutting out Missouri Southern and only allowing four hits.
Wade Rothermich started off the game with a walk and later scored on a
Colton Moore single in the first inning.
After a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third, the Lions got hot while scoring four runs on four hits.
Mike Failoni started the inning with a double and would be driven in by
Mike Wilson. Lindenwood took advantage of a fielding error by the Missouri Southern centerfielder. With runners on first and second,
Nick Kolley hit the ball hard up the middle to center which found its way past the centerfielder and would allow
Colton Moore and
Mike Wilson to score while Kolley advanced to third.
Ben Coudret would come up and drive Kolley in to give the Lions a 6-0 lead after three innings of play. Terrell only needed one run to work with as he only allowed four hits, walking just one batter, striking out seven en route to a 7-0 victory for Lindenwood in its first ever MIAA game. Four Lions compiled two hits apiece including Wilson who also had two RBIs.
Lindenwood just snuck by with the victory in game two. Again the Lions were the first to put a run up on the board by way of a Kolley double that drove in
Ryan Light who started off the inning being hit by a pitch.
Missouri Southern snapped back and put up a two spot in the top of the third to take the lead 2-1. The Lions tied the game at two in the fifth inning when the Missouri Southern defense made two crucial errors. Kolley led off the inning by reaching on an error by the pitcher. Coudret followed by reaching on an error, this time by the first baseman. Both runners would advance one base off a wild pitch putting them into scoring position.
Kolley would score on a
Nathan Prindle single that tied the game at 2. With runners at the corners,
Mike Failoni hit a hard shot down the line that was snagged by the third baseman which would eventually double-up Prindle at first to end the inning.
Both teams would lack hitting in the innings to follow as the next five innings went scoreless, sending the ballgame into extra innings. In the bottom of the 11
th inning, Wilson was able to start off by drawing a walk. After two infield popups
Eddie Sutton, who entered the game as a pinch runner in the seventh inning, would advance Wilson to third base on a single.
Sutton would steal second and Rothermich would walk which would load the bases. Prindle came to the plate and would stay disciplined as he drew the game-winning walk that brought in Wilson for the 3-2 win.
It took three Lindenwood pitchers to earn the victory which was started by five strong innings from
Zac Pearman.
Brian Hruby and
Austin Klein each threw three innings and did not allow a run. Klein earned his first win of the season as the Lions get their second on the year.
The Lions improve the 2-4 on the year and earn their first two victories in the MIAA. Both teams will finish up the series on Monday at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo. with a 1:00 p.m. start time.
