Lions Drop Two Games to Quincy

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Lindenwood baseball team could not manage get a victory on Wednesday in Quincy, Ill. falling in game one 5-2 and lost game two 6-5 in extra innings.

Game one featured just two runs on three hits for Lindenwood and only one hit came from starter Kyle Leslie.  The third-inning single for Leslie lead to a run later in the inning to tie the game at 1-1.  Quincy responded with back-to-back two-run innings to take a 5-1 lead after four innings of play.  Eddie Sutton hit a single down the right field line to start the seventh frame and crossed the plate to give Lindenwood hope to make it a three-run game.  It was too little too late as the Hawks took game one 5-2.

The Lions had a tough time stopping the Hawks from scoring in game two.  Quincy went scoreless in the first inning, but managed to get one run in each of the following five innings.  Lindenwood put up two runs in the top of the sixth inning that was sparked by a Mike Failoni single up the middle and a hard hit double by Marshall Vallandingham to put runners in scoring position.  Leslie grounded out, but managed to bring in Failoni.  Zac Perkins singled to right center and drive in Vallandingham to give the Lions a fighting chance.

Down three runs heading into the eighth inning Lindenwood made its move.  Failoni started the inning by drawing a walk and was followed by another walk to place Vallandingham on base.  Two batters later both runners moved up just one base and were now faced with two outs.  Nick Kolley hit a single to bring in both Failoni and Vallandingham to bring the Lions within one run.  Kyle Kruger was the pinch runner for Kolley and he used his speed to advance to third bases on a Ben Coudret single through the right side of the infield.  Kruger was able to cross the plate on a wild pitch to tie the game at 3-3.

The game went all the way into the 11th inning before the Hawks hit a walk-off single to win game two 6-5.

After the doubleheader loss the Lions fall to 10-17 on the year.  The Lions will look to jump back on track this weekend as they play host to Pittsburg State for a four-game MIAA series starting at 4 p.m. on Friday at the Lou Brock Sports Complex in St. Charles, Mo.
