Lindenwood roller hockey posted a perfect 3-0 record February 6-7 at the Midwest Collegiate Roller Hockey League Inter-Regional held at Hat Trick Hockey in Palatine, Ill., outside of Chicago. The Lions defeated Grand Valley State 7-2, Michigan State 6-2, and finished the weekend with another 7-2 victory over Miami (Ohio).
In the first game on Saturday against the Lakers, the two teams traded power play goals for a 1-1 tie at the end of the first period. Jacob Turowski scored for the Lions at the 2:18 mark with help from Cody Page and Grand Valley netted the puck with 34 seconds remaining. Lindenwood started to pull away in the second with three unanswered tallies. Anthony Erace found the back of the net after just 46 seconds, and was followed by Austin Halterman seven minutes later. Jalen Krogman scored short-handed off a pass from Steve Farina, but Grand Valley split the pipes as the horn sounded and the game went to the final period 4-2 in favor of the Lions. Lindenwood only allowed four shots in the third while scoring three goals. Halterman was the first to get one in the net at the 24 second mark. He was followed by Turowski at 3:50 and Erace at 7:25. That trio combined for six of the seven goals for the Lions in the contest, while Page led the team with three assists. Kevin Dwyer was in goal to earn the win with 14 saves on 16 shots, as Lindenwood outshot the Lakers 34-16 overall.
In the second game of the day for the Lions, Michigan State scored first and held the lead after the opening period. The Spartans lit the lamp at 5:47, but Trenton Matteson answered unassisted five minutes later. Michigan State jumped in front again as time expired and led 2-1 at the first intermission, but Lindenwood shutout the Spartans the rest of the way. Matteson scored his second straight goal with 4:46 remaining in the second and then assisted Krogman on another goal two minutes later for a 3-2 advantage after two periods. For the second straight game, the Lions owned the third, outshooting Michigan State 11-2 while scoring three goals. Turowski netted the first with help from Page and Krogman, Robert Berman scored unassisted, and then Matteson completed his hat trick on the power play with less than two minutes remaining. Dwyer earned his second victory of the day with 18 saves on 20 shots as Lindenwood outshot the Spartans 38-20.
For the second straight game, the Lions started slowly against the Redhawks on Sunday. Miami kept Lindenwood at bay while opening up a 2-0 lead in the first period, but the Lions offense returned in the second. Halterman ripped a shot at the 1:05 mark and was followed by Krogman at 3:22, and Matteson at 8:35. It was all Lindenwood in the final period once again with four more unanswered goals. Page and Krogman scored on the power play, Halterman netted his second of the game at even strength, and Turowski scored short-handed. The Lions outshot the Redhawks 15-2 in the third and 29-16 overall. Goaltender Bryan Lowery stopped 14 of those 16 shots to earn the win.
With three victories, Lindenwood improved to 16-1-1 on the season. After a couple weeks off, the Lions return to conference action in the Great Plains Collegiate Inline Hockey League (GPCIHL) February 19-21. Lindenwood starts the weekend with an important match-up against the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL) at 8 p.m. Friday night at Midwest Sport Hockey in Ballwin, Mo. The Lions will face Missouri State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, followed by Bethel at 4 p.m. with both games at Matteson Square Gardens in St. Peters, Mo. Lindenwood finishes regular season conference play at Midwest Sports Hockey on Sunday with games against Missouri State at 3 p.m. and against UMSL at 9 p.m.
