Roller Hockey Black Squad Wins Five in MCRHL

The roller hockey Black squad won five games in Midwest Collegiate Roller Hockey League (MCRHL) action January 27-28 at Midwest Sport Hockey in Ballwin, Missouri and Vetta 70 in St. Peters.

In the opening contest of the weekend, the Lions shutout Illinois State D3 by a score of 10-0. Lucas Hurst earned Star No. 1 honors with three goals and two assists, goaltender Connor Hof was named Star No. 2 with 27 saves on 27 shots, and Drew Royer received Star No. 3 recognition with three goals. Tristin Zeik scored twice, and Jay Winton and Lucas LeClair each scored once.

Lindenwood outshot the Redbirds 38-27 and scored three in the first period, four in the second, and another three in the third, the final one coming short-handed.

The Lions stopped Purdue D3 17-1 later on Saturday, scoring eight in the opening frame, three in the second, and six in the third. Lucas Hurst led the offense with five goals and two assists and earned Star No. 1 honors. Zeik was named Star No. 2 with four goals and two assists, and Royer received Star No. 3 recognition with a goal and four assists. Nicholas Wolfmeier had a hat trick to help the Lindenwood cause, and Winton, Dylan Pritchett, Matthew Tilley, and Anthony O'Keefe accounted for the other Lions goals, as they outshot the Boilermakers 38-15. Jonathan Chappell made 14 saves on 15 shots in goal.

Lindenwood outlasted Missouri S & T D3 11-6 Saturday night, outshooting the Miners 27-19. In the closest battle of the day, the Lions gave up the first goal before scoring the next four, but it took until the latter stages of the third before they were finally able to pull away and secure the victory. Hurst managed the first score of the game for Lindenwood short-handed and unassisted, then Royer followed with another unassisted for a 2-1 advantage after one.

Hurst scored again early in the second, followed by LeClair to make it 4-1 before Missouri S & T responded to pull back within two. Tilley made it 5-2 at the 7:55 mark, but the Miners answered with the next two to get within one. Hurst beat the buzzer for his second of the game to make it 6-4 Lions headed to the third.

Missouri S & T controlled the opening moments of the final frame and scored twice to tie things at 6-6, but Lindenwood finished regulation with five unanswered for the final margin. Tilley went back-to-back, then Royer, Hurst, and Royer.

Lucas Hurst earned Star No. 1 status with four goals and an assist, Drew Royer was named Star No. 2 with three goals and two assists, and Matthew Tilley received Star No. 3 honors with three goals and an assist. Chappell earned the win with 13 saves on 19 shots.

In a rematch with Purdue D3, the Lions defeated the Boilermakers 18-3. Lindenwood scored eight in the opening period while giving up three, then added another six unanswered in the second and finished with four in the third. Lucas Hurst earned Star No. 1 honors with six goals and an assist, Drew Royer was named Star No. 2 with four goals and four assists, and Tristin Zeik received Star No. 3 recognition with three goals and an assist.

The Lions outshot Purdue 45-11 and Chappell stopped eight of the 11 shots he faced to earn the victory in goal.

Lindenwood wrapped up the weekend with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Maryville University D3. After the Saints scored just 37-seconds into the game, they earned a power play, but Royer flipped the script with a short-handed goal at 2:43. Maryville did eventually score with the man-advantage to take a 2-1 lead, but Hurst tied it at 2-2 midway through the frame.

The two teams traded power play goals in the second with LeClair sounding the horn for the Lions sending the contest to the third in a 3-3 tie. The Saints were called for too many men at the 5:14 mark and Royer capitalized with what proved to be the game-winner 20-seconds later.

Lindenwood outshot Maryville 28-24 and Hof stopped 21 of the 24 shots he faced in goal. Royer earned Star No. 1 honors with two goals and an assist, Hurst was named Star No. 2 with a goal and two assists, and LeClair received Star No. 3 recognition with a goal and assist.

With the five victories, roller hockey Black improved to 13-2 on the season. The next action for the Lions will be the MCRHL Tournament the last weekend of February.
