The roller hockey Black squad took two of four on Saturday, February 8 at the Midwest Collegiate Roller Hockey League (MCRHL) at Midwest Sport Hockey in Manchester, Missouri. The Lions won their first two contests, defeating St. Louis CC (AFF) 3-2 and the Illinois State (D3) team 6-3. Lindenwood Black then fell to the Purdue (D3) squad 4-2 and Maryville (D3) 7-4 in the night cap.
In game one, St. Louis CC jumped head 11:16 into the first period of play and held their 1-0 lead until early in the second period. That's when Lindenwood answered with two goals of their own beginning with a goal by
Carter Crow at 1:54 and a second coming off Tristin Zeik's stick less than a minute later. St. Louis CC netted an even strength goal at 11:33 to tie the game up at two apiece heading into the final period of play.
Although the game was tied, it did not take very long for Joshua Collins and the Lions to break the deadlock. At 3:50, Collins found the back of the net and put Lindenwood ahead by a goal. The Lions played a clean, penalty free third period and held on to defeat the Arches 3-2 in game one.
Jonathan Chappell stopped 18 of 20 St. Louis CC shots and picked up a win in goal. Although outshot 20-18, the Lions got the better of the Archers thanks to good defense and excellent goaltending. Tristin Zeik earned first star honors tallying a goal and an assist. Game winning goal-scorer, Joshua Collins, was tabbed as the games second star with an identical stat line to Ziek's, and
Carter Crow was recognized as the games third star thanks to his second period goal.
The Lions followed up their 3-2 win with a 6-3 victory over the Illinois State (D3) Redbirds. Game two was back-and-forth contest for two periods, but eventually Lindenwood pulled away in the third. At the 5:30 mark,
Dax Myrdahl set up Tristin Zeik and put the Lions ahead. The Redbirds answered a couple minutes later, and the game was tied 1-1 heading into the second period.
The Lions got two quick goals at 1:40 and 2:00 by
Nolan Lawrenz and Joshua Collins respectively, but the Redbirds responded again at 3:07. Lindenwood continued to be on the offensive and scored at 11:35, taking a 4-2 lead into the third period.
Lindenwood began the third period on the penalty kill after a Zeik roughing penalty and Illinois State converted at 1:51, cutting the Lions lead to one goal yet again. However, the Lions soon got their two-goal lead back as
Matthew Brandon scored 13 seconds later to make it 5-3. Lindenwood would add a power play goal by Lawrenz at 3:34 to pad their lead and were able to cruise to a 6-3 victory in game two.
Lindenwood was once again outshot (27-26) but emerged victorious.
Dax Myrdahl got the nod in net for game two and stopped 24 of 27 Redbird shots and picked up an assist in the game.
Matthew Brandon scored a goal and two assists in the game, earning him the games first start.
Nolan Lawrenz received the second star thanks to his two scores in the contest. Myrdahl picked up the win in goal with his 24 saves and received the games third star.
After cruising to victory against the Redbirds, the Lions faltered against the Purdue (D3) Boilermakers. Purdue jumped in front just eight seconds into the first period which forced Lindenwood to play catchup all game long. Unable to get on the scoreboard with seven shots on goal, the Lions ended the first period trailing 1-0.
5:28 into the second period, Tristin Zeik found the back of net to tie the game at one, but goals 16 seconds apart by Purdue allowed the Boilermakers pad their lead to 3-1. Hindered by penalties, the Lions were unable to answer and trailed by two scores heading into the final period of play.
Purdue added an insurance goal at 2:02 extending their lead to 4-1. The Lions attempted to mount a third period comeback by firing 12 pucks on net, eventually scoring at 10:36 thanks to an unassisted tally by Brandon, but their deficit was simply too great to overcome.
For the first time on Saturday, the Lions outshot their opponent (25-17) but they ultimately came up short by the score of 4-2. Johnathan Chappell was tabbed for game three and made 13 saves on 17 shots but took the loss.
The final team the Black squad took the rink against was the Maryville (D3) Saints. After falling behind 1-0 early, the Lions offense took control of the period. While on the power play,
Corinna Weimann scored at 8:28 tying the game 1-1. Lindenwood went back to the power play a few minutes later and scored again, this time thanks to
Nolan Lawrenz at 11:33. The Lions outshot the Saints 11-8 in the first period and took a 2-1 lead into the second frame.
Maryville scored their first goal at 3:50 when Lindenwood was down a man, but two even-strength goals by Brandon at 4:26 and Lawrenz at 10:53 extended the Lions lead to 4-2. The Lions held their two goal lead for the remainder of the period.
After two excellent periods of play, the Lions sputtered in period three. The Saints sounded the horn five consecutive times in the third period and had the Lions constantly on their heels. The first goal came at 2:35 and the game-tying score came six seconds later. At 7:09 Maryville took the lead and never looked back. The Saints added two more goals for insurance at 7:25 and 11:52.
A disappointing final game for the Lions as they were outshot by Maryville 37-26 and fell by the score of 7-4.
Dax Myrdahl made his second start of the day and stopped 30 of 37 between the pipes. One bright spot for the Lions was that
Nolan Lawrenz earned the games third star as he scored two goals and added two assists.
After their .500 performance on Saturday, roller hockey Black sits at 6-6 on the year and 6-6 in MCRHL play. Â
