The Lions jumped in front of the Gophers with three unanswered goals in the first. Antonio scored on a play set up by
Ava Bilton and
Saskia Fuchs at 3:37, then freshman
Graece Fowler netted her first collegiate goal at the 11:38 mark with help from
Ardyn Hawryshko and
Hilary Pearce. Moments later, a Minnesota interference call gave Lindenwood a power play. That led to the first goal of the season from
Devyn Doti at 13:18, assisted by
Kailey Keller and Fowler.
The Gophers fought back in the second, breaking the shutout in the opening two minutes, but Bilton and
Madison Teague set up Antonio for her second of the game at 7:40 to rebuild a three-goal advantage. Minnesota countered with 1:16 remaining and it was 4-2 Lions at the second intermission.
The Gophers were still within striking distance, but Lindenwood removed any doubt of the outcome with three more in the third. Teague took matters into her own hands with a steal and unassisted effort at 8:03, then Fuchs sounded the horn for her first of the season at 10:10. Antonio and Bilton earned the assists on the play that made it 6-2 Lions. Antonio completed her hat trick when she took possession of the puck and buried a shot unassisted for her seventh of the year at 15:19. Minnesota scored in the waning moments of a four-on-four chance for the final margin.
Antonio finished with a total of four points on three goals and an assist and Bilton earned helpers on three goals in the contest. Lindenwood earned the victory despite being outshot 39 to 38.
With the win, the Lions improved to 2-4 in WMCH play and overall. For the first time this season, they will step out of conference to host the University of Rhode Island on Sunday. The puck drops at 12:50 p.m. at the Centene Community Ice Center.
