Women's ACHA ice hockey began a four-game western road trip with a 6-0 shutout loss to Arizona State Thursday night at the Mountain America Community Iceplex in Tempe, Arizona.
The Lions were on the defensive from the start of the contest but played the Sun Devils even through the first period. A tripping penalty on Lindenwood early in the second seemed to open the floodgates for ASU. After capitalizing on the power play at the 3:39 mark, the Sun Devils scored again five-on-five at 5:07. A cross-checking call against the Lions led to another power play goal at 11:18. Lindenwood spent another four minutes in the box over the rest of the period and while it didn't lead directly to another score, the fatigue of the penalty kill was a key factor in the next Arizona State goal at 18:31. The Sun Devils carried a 4-0 lead into the second intermission.
After yielding a fifth goal at 2:28 of the third, the Lions had a chance to break the shutout on their own power play, but ASU killed it off. The Sun Devils added their sixth goal of the game at 6:42 and that proved to be the final of the contest.
ASU outshot Lindenwood 58-17 and
Erica Didocha stopped 52 of the 58 shots she faced for an .897 save percentage. Arizona State scored twice on five power play chances while holding the Lions scoreless on two man-advantage chances.
Lindenwood is now 0-20-1 for the season. The Lions continue their western road trip with another game against the Sun Devils on Friday. The puck drops at 4 p.m. MST at the Mountain America Community Iceplex.
