Women’s ACHA Hockey Wraps up Western Trip with Two against Grand Canyon

Women's ACHA ice hockey wrapped up a four-game western road trip with a pair of losses against Grand Canyon University, 4-2 on Saturday and 2-0 on Sunday at the Arizona Ice Arcadia in Phoenix, Arizona.

In the series opener, the Lions fell behind by four goals before mounting a late comeback that fell short. Despite getting three power plays in the first period, the Lopes scored their first three, five-on-five. They came in a span of just under three-and-a-half minutes at 9:48, 10:04, and 13:13, giving GCU a 3-0 lead at the first intermission.

A tripping penalty against Lindenwood put the Lopes back on the power play at 6:37 of the second and they quickly cashed it in at 7:14 to make it 4-0. The Lions broke the shutout a few minutes later when Emma Coxworthy and Mackenzie Cameron set up freshman Gracen Kirklin for her first collegiate goal at 10:44 to cut the Lindenwood deficit to three. Freshman Piper Thomas then scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from Ava Bilton at the 22-second mark of the third to make it 4-2.

The Lions were back in the game, but that was as close as they would get. The Lopes cranked up the offense, out shooting Lindenwood 24-3 in the third with help from four Lions penalties. Grand Canyon did not score but controlled the puck and ran out the clock.

Overall, the Lopes out shot Lindenwood 58-24. Erica Didocha stopped 54 of the 58 shots she faced for a .931 save percentage in the contest.

In the series finale on Sunday, the Lions were given seven power plays but could not get the puck to the back of the net in a 2-0 shutout loss. Grand Canyon jumped in front early with an even-strength goal just 30 seconds into the game.

There were seven penalties called in the second period, three on Lindenwood and four on the Lopes, resulting in five power plays overall, but neither team scored.

GCU was called for an additional five penalties in the third, but it was the Lopes that sounded the horn for the only goal of the period at 16:24, playing five-on-five.

Grand Canyon out shot the Lions 43-18 with Didocha stopping 41 of the 43 pucks she faced for a .953 save percentage in the loss.

Lindenwood is now 0-23-1 for the season. The Lions wrap up the regular season with a home-and-home series against McKendree University in Women's Midwest Collegiate Hockey (WMCH) action February 13 and 15. The Bearcats host the game on Friday at the Metro Rec-Plex in O'Fallon, Illinois starting at 7:45 p.m. with Lindenwood hosting the Sunday afternoon contest beginning at 3:30 p.m. at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
