The women's ACHA division I ice hockey team fell to the Maryville Saints 5-4 Sunday afternoon at Maryville Ice Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The loss is a tough one to swallow for the Lions as they went 0-1-1 on the weekend, tying in an overtime game Friday and losing by one goal on Sunday.
Loki Antonio got the first period scoring started for the Lions with her 24
th goal at 5:06.
Madison Teague and
Ardyn Hawryshko picked up assists on goal. A Lions slashing penalty at 7:31 gave the Saints a power play which led to the first Saints goal at 8:24. The score remained tied 1-1 as the first period came to a close.
The second period saw Maryville outshoot Lindenwood 14-5 in shots on goal but resulted in two goals for each side. The first Lions goal came on the power play at 3:03 when
Kailey Keller and
Devyn Doti set up Kenzie Cameron for her 3
rd of the season. The Saints tied the game 2-2 at 11:06, but
Madison Teague gave the Lions the lead right back at 15:48. While killing off a tripping minor, Teague scored her 7
th of the season shorthanded giving the Lions a 3-2 advantage. Unfortunately for Teague, she was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct minor penalty following the goal, which resulted in Maryville tying the game once more at 16:52. The score was 3-3 entering the third period of play.
At 5:20 of the third period, the Saints took their first lead of the afternoon at even strength. With the Lions now down a goal,
Loki Antonio scored her 25
th of the year and 2
nd of the game, tying the game at four goals apiece thanks to a play started by Kenzie Cameron. Unfortunately for Lions goaltender,
Evi Allerding, the offensive onslaught by the Saints was too much to fend off and the Saints scored the game winning goal at 14:46. A late push by the Lions was thwarted by the Saints net minder, and the Lions fell just short in regulation time.
Sustained offensive zone pressure by the Saints early in the game slowly wore down the Lions as they were outshot by a total of 40-25. Allerding played well, stopping 35 of 40 Saints shots, but unfortunately was tabbed with the loss. The Lions now fall three games below .500 at 8-11-2 on the season. They will look to refocus over their holiday hiatus and come out rejuvenated for the final third of their season. Lindenwood will take the ice again on Saturday, January 18
th when they play Grand Valley State University at Centene Community Ice Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 9:10 p.m.
