Traveling with a young side to start to the season, men's rugby dominated the inaugural "Dual-Sport Derby" against the Kansas Jayhawks, securing a 31-3 victory Saturday afternoon at City Park in Kansas City, Kansas.
The match was the first of a two-part competition, with the rugby and football teams from Lindenwood and Kansas competing on the same day. Despite a strong performance from the Lions on the pitch, the Jayhawks claimed the trophy with a 15-point aggregate victory after posting a 48-3 win in the football contest.
Head Coach Josh Macy reflected on the occasion. "We were thankful to be included in a huge sports day for our university. Campus leadership stopping by the game, firing up the players, and inviting us to Children's Mercy for the football game was an excellent way to start this year's campaign."
How it Happened (rugby):
After an early penalty put Kansas ahead 3-0, a lightning delay revitalized the Lindenwood.
Caden Howe opened the scoring with a try at the 25-minute mark, followed by a powerful run from
Cameron Schafer, which
Hassan Lin converted. Scrumhalf Sebastiano Battara added another try, bringing the halftime score to 19-3.
The Lions momentum continued after the break with
Ivan Ingram powering over from a maul just two minutes into the second half. A penalty try in the 35
th minute sealed the win.
