Men’s Rugby Trains with Chicago Hounds MLR Squad

Men's rugby trained and scrimmaged with the Chicago Hounds Major League Rugby (MLR) team on Friday at Seat Geek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois. The extraordinary opportunity, a rare one for collegiate teams, is a testament to the program's strength and reputation with the rugby community. The Lions embraced the challenge and performed strongly across nearly every phase of the game.

The day provided Lindenwood players with invaluable insights into professional-level rugby. Junior wing Karsten Rice reflected on the experience, noting how it pushed the team to elevate their performance.

"The biggest adjustment was definitely the speed at which decisions were made and skills were executed," Rice explained. "We want to go that fast for the rest of the year."

The fast-paced nature of the scrimmage served as both a benchmark and an inspiration, fueling the team's drive to sharpen their skills further.

Kicking coach Stephen Duff highlighted how the session set a clear focus for the team moving forward.

"It was an excellent day to firm up a real concrete target to improve our skills day in and day out at training for the rest of the season," Duff said. "Thank you to the Hounds."

Adding to the impact of the day was a special moment with Lindenwood alumnus and current Chicago Hounds player Michael Baska. Baska, a standout during his time at Lindenwood, spoke to the team about making the most of their collegiate experience.

"Believe in the places your friendships and opportunities will take you," he urged as he reminded the players of the lasting value their time with Lindenwood rugby will have. His words resonated with the group, connecting their present efforts to their future aspirations.

Off the field, the Chicago Hounds extended remarkable hospitality to the Lions. The team enjoyed a post-scrimmage meal, toured the Hounds' state-of-the-art facilities, and received thoughtful gifts and encouraging words from the coaches and captains. The generosity and professionalism of the Hounds made a lasting impression on the players and staff.

The trip wasn't all rugby, as the team took time to enjoy the cultural landmarks of Chicago. They visited the iconic Cloud Gate sculpture, better known as "The Bean," and indulged in the city's renowned Italian beef sandwiches. These shared moments deepened the camaraderie within the team and added an extra layer of meaning to an already memorable experience.

The training session with the Chicago Hounds underscores commitment of the Lindenwood rugby program to provide its players with opportunities to grow on and off the field. By engaging with the professional rugby community, the team continues to prepare its athletes for success at the collegiate level and beyond. Lindenwood University is deeply grateful to the Chicago Hounds for their partnership and hospitality and looks forward to building on what was an incredible experience.
