The Lindenwood women's ACHA Division I ice hockey team dropped their first game in the Women's Midwest College Hockey Conference Tournament on Thursday night 10-0 to the number two seed Maryville Saints. Lions goaltender
Evi Allerding returned between the pipes for the first time since February 1st against Miami (Ohio).
Allerding kept the Lions in the game for most of the first period, but the Lindenwood offense was unable to get any traction. The first goal of the game came at 13:14 when Maryville cashed in on a power play opportunity. With
Devyn Doti in the penalty box for boarding, the Saints took a 1-0 lead. The Saints added another two goals at 16:52 and 19:19 to take a 3-0 lead into the second period of play. The Lions were only able to muster three shots on goal in the first period.
In the second period, the Lions were able to generate more offensive pressure and tallied nine shots on goal. Maryville, on the other hand, racked up 13 shots on goal and four goals in the second. Similarly to the first period, Lindenwood held Maryville off the scoresheet for the first half of the frame, but the goals came in bunches in the second half. The Saints collected four second period goals with the first coming at 12:58, the second at 13:33 while on the power play, the third at 16:19, and the last at 19:12. The Saints held a commanding 7-0 lead going into the third period.
The Lions were able to stay out of the penalty box but were still unable to find the back of the net in the third period. Maryville added three more goals on seven shots to make it 10-0 by the 10:11 mark. The Saints first of three third period tallies came at 2:18 and the second a minute and five seconds later. The Lions put five pucks on net in the third period, but the Saints netminder blanked Lindenwood for all three frames of the contest.
Allerding stopped 22 of 32 Saints shots and was handed the loss Thursday night. The Lions special teams also struggled as they surrendered two goals on two penalty kills and were unable to tally any scores on their two man advantages. The Lions record now sits at 11-18-2 on the year.
Lindenwood will take the ice for a consolation game from the Metro Rec-plex in O'Fallon, Illinois, but the time and their opponent is yet to be determined.
