Roller Hockey Sweeps Four Games at MCRHL Showcase

Roller hockey swept all four games it played at the Midwest Collegiate Roller Hockey League (MCRHL) Showcase February 1-2 at Salt Creek Arena in Palatine, Illinois, outside of Chicago. After defeating the University of Arizona 7-3 Saturday morning, the Lions posted back-to-back shutouts 9-0 versus Rowan University and 4-0 against Grand Canyon University. Lindenwood wrapped up the weekend with an 8-3 victory over Arizona State Sunday morning.

In the opening game against the Wildcats, Cameron Green gave the Lions a quick 1-0 lead just 28-seconds into the first off a pass from Luke DiPasquale. Arizona responded just over a minute later to knot things at one, but Lindenwood scored the next two for a 3-1 advantage. Landon Kooker sounded the horn at 4:41 with help from Green and DiPasquale, then DiPasquale set up Jack Wedoski at 7:27.roller hockey vs Henry Ford CC 521

Special teams made a big impact early in the second with three straight goals coming on the power play. Kooker was set up by Parker Winkelmann and DiPasquale at the 26-second mark, but the Wildcats made a push to get back in the game with man-advantage shots at 7:04 and 10:25. After earning assists on the first four Lindenwood goals, DiPasquale scored his own with 13-seconds left in the period on a play set up by Green and the Lions led 5-3 after two.

Lindenwood pulled away in the third with goals from Wedoski at 2:03, assisted by Brett Worster, and from DiPasquale, who took control of the puck and scored unassisted at 10:41 on the power play.

The Lions outshot Arizona 26-15 and Chase Christopher stopped 12 of 15 to earn the win in goal. DiPasquale earned Star No. 1 honors with two goals and four assists, Green was named Star No. 2 with a goal and two assists, and Wedoski received Star No. 3 recognition with two goals.

Lindenwood demonstrated some offensive skills in the win over Rowan. The Lions only needed 18 shots to score their nine goals in the contest. Three goals came in the first period, followed by four in the second with one coming on the power play, and two more in the third. Kooker earned Star No. 1 honors with a hat trick and an assist, DiPasquale was named Star No. 2 with two goals and a pair of assists, and Wedoski received Star No. 3 recognition with two goals and an assist. Winkelmann scored the other two goals while Green added a trio of assists and Worster had one assist to help the Lindenwood cause.

Josh Henson stopped all 10 shots he faced to earn the victory as the Lions outshot the Profs 18-10.

Goaltending was the difference in the Saturday nightcap against the Lopes. Both teams fired 21 shots on goal, but Christopher turned away everything while Lindenwood put four pucks past the Grand Canyon netminder. Kooker was the first to do so unassisted early in the first period and the 1-0 lead held through the first 12-minutes. Wedoski hit the back of the cage at the 1:28 mark of the second and Winkelmann made it 3-0 at 9:13. The final score came from DiPasquale at 1:19 of the third.

Christopher earned Star No. 1 honors with his 21 saves and shutout, Winkelmann received Star No. 2 recognition with a goal and assist, and DiPasquale was named Star No. 3 with a goal and assist.

Despite being outshot 30-15, the Sun Devils remained within striking distance until the third period, but the Lions controlled the opening 12-minutes with three unanswered. DiPasquale started the offense at 1:19 with help from Bryce Pierce, Worster rung the bell just 31-seconds later, and DiPasquale completed the scoring sandwich at 8:08.

ASU made a comeback in the opening moments of the second with goals at 1:58 and 4:24 to make it 3-2, but Kooker increased the margin back to two less than a minute later. It remained 4-2 Lindenwood into the third, but Worster needed just 26-seconds in the period to make it 5-2. Green added to the effort at 5:32 to make it 6-2 before the Sun Devils scored their third of the game on the power play at 8:20. DiPasquale (10:35) and Wedoski (11:20) extinguished any thoughts of another Arizona State comeback.

Henson earned the win with 12 saves on 15 shots. DiPasquale earned his third Star No. 1 honor of the weekend with a hat trick and assist, Green was named Star No. 2 with a goal and two assists, and Worster received Star No. 3 recognition with two goals.

With the four victories, roller hockey improved to a perfect 11-0 on the season. The Lions will return to the Salt Creek Arena for the MCRHL Conference Championships February 22.
