Women's ACHA ice hockey carried a lead through the second period, but eventually fell to the University of Massachusetts – Amherst 3-2 in overtime Thursday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
The Minutewomen took an early lead on an even-strength play at 6:19 of the first and they carried that advantage through the opening period, outshooting the Lions 14-8.
Lindenwood countered on a power play early in the second. Mackenzie Cameron and
Kailey Keller set up
Devyn Doti for her first goal of the season. Moments later,
Ava Bilton sounded the horn for her first of the season off a nice pass from
Emma Coxworthy at 3:36, and the Lions led 2-1.
Lindenwood outshot UMass 19-7 in the frame and held that advantage into the third, but that's when the Minutewomen tied the contest. The game remained knotted at 2-2 through regulation and then UMass scored the game-winner in overtime.
The Minutewomen outshot the Lions overall 52-36 and
Erica Didocha stopped 49 of the 52 shots she faced in a hard-fought loss.
With the overtime loss, Lindenwood is now 0-13-1 on the season. The Lions have an off day before a home-and-home series against Maryville University January 17-18. The Saints will host the first game at 6 p.m. on Saturday at the Maryville Ice Center in Chesterfield, Missouri, and then Lindenwood hosts the second game at 7 p.m. on Sunday at the Centene Community Ice Center.
