Men's rugby finished play in the Mid-South Conference with a 13-10 win over Davenport Saturday afternoon in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Lions faced cold and snowy field conditions, but prevailed despite being a man short for 25 minutes of game time.
It was the Panthers who took the lead early in the match with a successful penalty kick after a Lindenwood off-sides call. The Lions answered in the 15
th minute when Corey Harmann finished a great drive with a try, but the conversion failed, leaving Lindenwood with a 5-3 advantage. Moments later, Tommy Stachowiak was given a yellow card and sent off for 10 minutes, but Davenport couldn't capitalize with the extra man. A disciplined effort from the Lions forced a turnover as the Panthers drove to the try line. In the final minute of the first half, Lunaile Tshuma booted a penalty kick to give Lindenwood an 8-3 lead at the break.
The Lions extended their advantage in the 52
nd minute when Jack Huckstepp dove across the line, but a red card sent Tom O'Connor off the pitch in the 65
th minute, giving Davenport another man-advantage situation for the final 15 minutes of game time. The Panthers took advantage with a try and conversion to pull within three points, but that was as close as they would get.
Lindenwood finished the regular season 15's schedule with a record of 7-3 overall and a Mid-South mark of 2-2. The Lions start the USA Rugby D1A Playoffs by hosting Wheeling Jesuit April 16. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Lindenwood Track. Lindenwood is one of 12 teams participating in the championship.
