Men's rugby struggled throughout a 47-6 loss to Life University Saturday evening at Hunter Stadium in St. Charles, Missouri. The Lions entered the game with confidence after strong showings against No. 4 Army and conference rival Arkansas State, but that confidence was quickly shaken in the first half.
Lindenwood did take an early advantage in the contest on a penalty kick from freshman
Evan Williams in the sixth minute, but the Running Eagles quickly countered with strong running through their midfield to score a converted try and take the lead 7-3. Williams booted another penalty kick minutes later to make it 7-6 Life, but that would be as close as the Lions would get the rest of the contest.
Although they were able to work their game plan and create space to attack, uncharacteristic mistakes crept into the Lindenwood attack, with ill-advised passes and dropped catches. Unfortunately, the lack-luster offense bled into the defensive side of the ball as well, and the Lions trailed 26-6 at the break.
Despite the deficit, Lindenwood started the second half with renewed vigor, but mental errors continued to thwart the team effort. The Lions managed a clean slate early, but Life scored another try about 12 minutes into the half and continued to add to the scoreboard despite the best defensive efforts from hooker
Kayleb O'Donoghue and second row
Emmanuel Albert.
Captain
Wesley White had some shining moments with cutting runs on attack and stifling tackles on defense and kept Lindenwood fighting, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome.
After switching gears for some spring sevens action, the Lions will try to right the 15's ship in the first round of the D1A Playoffs April 13. An opponent and location is yet to be determined.
