Special teams were a key factor for women's ACHA ice hockey in a 4-1 win over Miami (Ohio) Saturday night at the Goggin Ice Center in Oxford, Ohio. The Lions scored twice in five chances on the power play, but yielded nothing to the Redhawks in six shorthanded situations, including a five-on-three in the latter half of the second period.
The first Lindenwood power play goal and the first of two scores in the game for
Ardyn Hawryshko came at 15:59 of the opening frame on a setup by
MacKenzie Drost and
Madison Teague. The Lions carried a 1-0 advantage into the second until Miami tied the contest at 4:56, but Hawryschko struck again with 4:23 remaining in the period on an even-strength effort that was assisted by
Kiara Stewart and
Nikki Lillies to give Lindenwood a 2-1 lead. The Lions doubled that advantage exactly three minutes later on a Lillies pass to
Tessa O'Connor, and they added some insurance at 17:04 of the third when
Hallie Fisher sounded the horn on the power play with help from
Rylee Gee and
Kim Turcotte.
Lindenwood outshot the Redhawks 43 to 21, and
Maia Busi stopped all but one of the 21 pucks she faced to earn the victory in goal, which propelled the Lions to 16-4-2 overall on the season.
Lindenwood wraps up the scheduled regular season February 19-20 with a home series against the University of Minnesota. The opening faceoff is set for 9:30 p.m. Saturday night and for 12:20 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
