After winning the first game of the series Saturday night, women's ACHA ice hockey attempted to sweep Grand Valley State University on Sunday afternoon, but came up short 3-1 at the Hudsonville Ice Arena in Hudsonville, Michigan.
The Lions offense struggled to get going in the opening period, managing only three shots on goal while giving up 14 to the Lakers. The result was a 2-0 deficit after GVSU goals at 13:23 and 18:22.
The two teams played a bit more evenly in the second, but defense and goaltending ruled as neither team found the back of the net. Lindenwood finally scored early in the third when
Graece Fowler set up
Alexandria Tholl at 2:45. Trailing just 2-1, the Lions were back in the game, but could not find an equalizer. The Lakers added a goal at 14:34 to make it 3-1 and that proved to be the final score.
Grand Valley outshot Lindenwood 35 to 18, and
Katelyn Nobili stopped 32 of the 35 shots she faced for the Lions.
With the loss, Lindenwood dropped to 1-3 overall. The Lions get a four-week break from competition before returning to the ice for three in a row October 22-24. They will host Maryville in a Women's Midwest College Hockey (WMCH) conference game on that Thursday at Centene Community Ice Center, then will travel to face Miami (Ohio) University in a two-game series on the road Friday and Saturday at the Goggin Ice Center in Oxford, Ohio.
