Men’s Rugby Starts Season with Victory over D2 Champions

In a tough battle against the reigning D2 national champions, men's rugby found a way to grind to a 22-3 victory over Principia College Saturday afternoon at the Lindenwood Track Complex in St. Charles, Missouri. Tries from Lautaro Soto Ansay, Jaryd de Jager, and Byron Forword propelled the Lions over the Panthers.

How it Happened:
Early in the match in the ninth minute, Forword connected on a short penalty kick to give Lindenwood an early 3-0 advantage, but Principia wasted little time to counter. After a strong attack pushed the Panthers into Lions territory, the Lindenwood defense held firm. After numerous attempts to drive the ball over the line, Principia settled for a game-tying penalty kick in the 21st minute.

With 10 minutes remaining in the half, the Lions executed an attacking set-piece 22-meters out. A quick cutout pass landed in the hands of de Jager who outran the opposition and scored in the corner to give Lindenwood an 8-3 lead in the 31st minute. That proved to be the final score before the break.

After the half, the Lions struck quickly as Forword crashed through the Panthers backline for a try in the opening minute. The conversion from Forword gave him 10 points for the match and extended the Lindenwood lead to 15-3.

With a strong team defensive showing and strategic kicking from reserve fly half Tyresse Prescod, the Lions kept pressure in the Principia half until Soto Ansay exploded through the gain line for the last try of the match in the 73rd minute. Prescod booted the conversion to give Lindenwood a 22-3 advantage, which proved to be the final score.
