The women's ACHA Division I ice hockey team defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils Saturday night by the score of 4-3 in overtime at Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri. The win completes an impressive weekend sweep of the Sun Devils.
The Lions jumped into the lead just 3:03 into the game as Madison Teague netted her fifth goal of the season thanks to an excellent feed from Kailey Keller. The game remained 1-0 until Arizona State evened the contest at the 18:18 mark of the period. However, Ava Bilton and the Lions took the lead again as she scored her first goal of the season at 19:26. Bilton's power play goal was assisted by Loki Antonio and Madison Teague.
Arizona State came out firing in the second period, peppering Lions goaltender Evi Allerding with fifteen shots on goal in the period. One shot found the back of the net and tied the game up at 2-2 at 7:04. The score remained knotted up through the remainder of the period.
As the third period got underway, both teams matched each other's intensity. The Sun Devils pulled ahead at 16:07, capturing their first lead of the game, but the Lions were not phased. Lions forward, Ardyn Hawryshko, tied the game at 17:43 with a quick shot thanks to a beautiful play set up by Madison Teague and Katelynn Weeks.
From the first faceoff in overtime, the Lions took control. The Lions outshot the Sun Devils 3-0 in the period with the final shot coming off Hawryshko's stick again. The goal, assisted by Loki Antonio and Hilary Pearce, came 4:00 into overtime, just beating the Sun Devils net minder. Hawryshko had one of her best games of the year, scoring her fifth and sixth goals of the season- including the game winner in overtime.
The Lions look to extend their winning streak to three games tomorrow afternoon as they take on the Miami University (OH) Redhawks. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
