Women's Ice Hockey-ACHA Jackson Case

Defense and Special Teams Are Key as Beavers Best Lions 3-1

The women's ACHA Division I ice hockey team was bested by the Minot State University Beavers on Saturday afternoon by the score of 3-1 at Maysa Arena in Minot, North Dakota. With the loss, the Lions split the weekend series with the Beavers one game apiece.

The first period was silent as both net minders kept the opposing team off the score sheet. The Lions only mustered one shot on goal in the first period. The Beavers, on the other hand, put twelve shots on Lindenwood goaltender Evi Allerding. Allerding halted all twelve Minot State shots, keeping the score 0-0 after the first.

As the second period commenced, the Lions failed to capitalize on an early period power play. Soon afterwards, two costly Lindenwood penalties by Loki Antonio and Graece Fowler gave the Beavers a five-on-three power play. The Beavers scored two goals on the power plays, breaking the deadlock and taking a 2-0 lead into the third period.

2:49 seconds into the third period, Minot State scored again and extended their lead to 3-0. The Lions made it 3-1 at the 11:32 mark thanks to a power play goal by Ardyn Hawryshko. The goal -assisted by Antonio- was Hawryshko's ninth of the season and second in as many games. The Lions tightened up their defense in the third, only allowing six Minot State shots to reach Allerding. Unfortunately, the Lions only put four pucks on net in the third period, and a measly ten shots on goal for the entire contest. Lindenwood was outshot by Minot State 37-10 in the game.

The Beavers stifling defense and capitalization on the two man advantages were certainly keys to their success. With the loss, the Lions drop a game below .500 and hold a record of 6-7 on the season. Lindenwood will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Jamestown, North Dakota to battle the University of Jamestown Jimmies. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
