Women’s ACHA Hockey Falls to Midland in Series Finale

Women's ACHA hockey fell to Midland University 3-1 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Sidner Ice Arena in Fremont, Nebraska. The Lions scored the first goal of the game but were not able to hold the lead in the Women's Midwest College Hockey (WMCH) contest.

In a physical affair that featured 13 different penalties, Lindenwood took the first minor at 6:14 of the first, but successfully killed it off. The Warriors were called for tripping at 10:44 and it only took 18-seconds for Hilary Pearce and Madison Teague to set up Loki Antonio for a power play goal and a 1-0 Lions advantage. Four more penalties were called during the remainder of the period, but no scoring resulted.

After outshooting Lindenwood 13-6 in the opening frame, Midland began the second with a golden opportunity to tie the game. While Warriors forward Callie Maguire was racing towards the Lions goal, Teague tripped her. McGuire was awarded a penalty shot, but Lindenwood netminder Evi Allerding stopped the effort to preserve the lead. Despite the Warriors outshooting the Lions 11-3, the score remained 1-0 Lions through the end of the period.

After a heroic effort through the first 40-minutes, the Lindenwood defense cracked in the third. The Lions were called for tripping at the 2:05 mark and Midland capitalized with a power play goal at 3:15 to tie the game 1-1. Just over three minutes later, another Warriors forward stole the puck and raced up ice, ultimately burying a shot unassisted for a 2-1 advantage. Midland added some insurance later in the period after another Lindenwood tripping penalty. The Warriors cashed in the power play at 13:36 to extend their lead to 3-1 and ran out the clock to sweep the Lions.

Midland outshot Lindenwood 37-12 with Allerding stopping 34 of the 37 pucks she faced, including a nice effort that denied a penalty shot. The Lions went 1/6 on the power play while yielding two goals on seven man-advantage chances.

With the loss, Lindenwood begins the 2024-25 campaign with an 0-2 record overall and in the WMCH. The Lions return to conference action when they host McKendree September 28-29 for their first home series of the season. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 9:20 p.m. Saturday night and at 2:10 p.m. Sunday afternoon at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.
